The Department of Fisheries and Oceans reminded people in the province today that the fall recreational groundfish fishery will open Saturday and run to Sept. 29.
A news release notes the fishery will occur in all NAFO areas around Newfoundland and Labrador, which includes 2GH, 2J3KL, 3Ps, 3Pn, and 4R.
The public is reminded that fishing is not permitted in the Eastport and Gilbert Bay Marine Protected Areas (MPA).
Participants are reminded to inspect their catch carefully for pink or yellow tags, located in the back of the fish. The tags are uniquely numbered and have a DFO address and reward value ($10 or $100) printed on them. Participants should return the tag, along with recapture information and their mailing address, to claim the tag reward.
Management measures will be the same as in 2012, including a daily bag limit of five groundfish per day (including cod) and a maximum boat limit of 15 fish when three or more people are fishing. This includes tour boats.
