Authorities in Carbonear initially thought they were dealing with an overturned boat on Wednesday. The incident proved to be a false alarm.

What was initially thought to have been an incident involving an overturned boat near Carbonear Island turned out to be a false alarm, according to Trinity Conception RCMP.

A call was made late Wednesday afternoon concerning the possible sighting of an overturned sailboat with its occupants apparently in the water.

The vessel was later located safely moored in Bristol’s Hope. The boat’s captain told police they had sought refuge there due to poor weather conditions. It was confirmed that the boat did not overturn.

Volunteer fire departments from Carbonear and Harbour Grace responded to the incident along with the Canadian Coast Guard.
