Dan Bobbett was elected the new mayor of Paradise last night, taking 2,368 votes, but was trailed very closely by Allan English, who finished with 2,094.
English had held the deputy mayor’s chair coming into the election and Bobbett was a councillor.
“It was quite the battle,” Bobbett said when the final numbers had come in about a half hour after midnight.
“It was quite the campaign. And it was flat out every day knocking on doors and meeting the people.”
Early in the night, Bobbett and English were neck and neck, with Bobbett slowly pulling ahead as the night went on as the numbers from more and more polling stations came in.
“Initially it was pretty darn close,” Bobbett said.
English could not be reached for comment. Ralph Wiseman, who had been mayor, did not seek re-election this time around.
Four people re-elected as councillors in Paradise were Vince Burton, Elizabeth Laurie, Deborah Quilty and Sterling Willis. However, a new face on council — Paul Dinn — received the highest number of votes with 2,810. He is joined by Patrick Martin as the new blood in the Paradise council chambers.
