Blessing of the animals

Many four-legged friends and their owners made their way to the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in downtown St. John’s Saturday afternoon for the  annual
St. Francis blessing of the animals service.

The event is held on the Saturday closest to the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and all living things, which occurs on Oct. 4.

The annual blessing was started in St. John's in 1997 by Esther Buckley at St. Pius X Church.

After a couple of years it moved to the Anglican cathedral, where it has been held to the present day.

This year more than 150 pet owners and their beloved animals attended the ceremony, at which each creature was blessed individually by clergy.

Among the animals present at the blessing were a variety of dogs and cats, along with some less common pets, such as a bearded dragon, a hedgehog, dwarf frogs and more.

You must not own an animal...Pet lovers think just as much of their animals as their animals think of them. There is nothing wrong with loving something just as much as it loves you and wanting to bless your animal for it to have a happy and healthy life. Don't waste your time reading the articles or commenting on them if you don't understand the meaning behind it. This lady took the time to photograph this service, so obviously it means something. The Clergy is very highly thought of for even considering opening their doors to animals. I think it's an amazing thing they are doing. It's nice to go into a building full of people with smiles on their faces, which clearly, by your comment you don't see very often. Maybe you should bring your animal (if you have one) next year so you can see how much it brightens your day to see the children laughing and playing with your animals. I think it's great!!! Thanks for issuing this article! :)
