Memorial University said today an online dialect atlas of Newfoundland and Labrador will help preserve the rich cultural heritage of this province by documenting the regional distribution of the many traditional linguistic features that characterize English in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The atlas will be officially launched Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. at The Landing, University Centre, on Memorial’s St. John’s campus.

The Dialect Atlas of Newfoundland and Labrador is one of only a handful of online regional dialect atlases in the English-speaking world.

Brilliant idea .. never let the 'tongues' of the Rock fade .. it's my mother tongue, my first language, the most delightful expression of our forefathers' dialects and dandy words that sound like 'verbal medicine' to a Newf landing for a visit home; to hear it makes me want to dance and skip my return flight .. 'pon me soul o'God I dearly loves it; yes my dear indeed I do so!
