Liberal leadership candidate Danny Dumaresque is worried about icebergs in the Strait of Belle Isle, and he’s got a perfect solution in mind: a tunnel.
Dumaresque has been one of the most consistent and vocal critics of the Muskrat Falls project, and his news conference today was billed as presenting “evidence of the most serious flaw in the Muskrat Falls project.”
Dumaresque said he believes scouring by icebergs could destroy the subsea cable connecting Labrador to Newfoundland, and said that Nalcor is “playing Russian roulette” by laying a cable on the ocean floor — protected with underwater rock berms.
Dumaresque has also made a road tunnel connecting the Northern Peninsula to Southern Labrador into one of the major planks of this Liberal leadership bid.
Dumaresque said he’s convinced that’s the better way to go.
He conceded that going the tunnel route could “delay electricity to the island for a year or so” but he said it’s the safer option.
