Shift Supt. Don Byrne spoke with reporters once firefighters had the second fire in a week at 48 Spencer St. in St. John's under control.
He said there was too much time between tonight's fire and the one that took place there last Wednesday for this to have been a flareup, making it clear that this was a separate fire.

Once firefighters broke through the double roof with chainsaws, they were able to quickly put the fire out.
Firefighters were called to 48 Spencer St. in St. John's just before 7 p.m. tonight to battle another fire at the vacant home.
The first fire there was around 8 p.m. this past Wednesday night.
Tonight firefighters were met with heavy smoke upon arrival. Firefighters are now using chainsaws to ventilate the roof. Smoke also appears to be coming from eaves.
Firefighters are on the roof cutting a hole in a portion of No. 50, an attached home. Smoke is coming from that home, too.
