Firefighters were called to a downtown St. John’s office tower Tuesday evening after an odor of smoke was noticed on the 12th floor.

St. John’s Regional Fire Department Supt. Derek Chafe said crews too noticed a slight odor when they began investigating at Cabot Place on 100 New Gower Street. It was eventually determined there was an issue with an elevator coil located at the penthouse.

“There was very minor damage to one of the coils,” said Chafe. “It was just the smoke and no visible fire. There’s actually very little smoke damage outside of what was in that main room.”

The incident did inconvenience some people who were leaving Mile One Centre following the conclusion of a St. John’s IceCaps game. People with vehicles in the underground parking lot were not being allow to enter it off of Barters Hill due to the alarm activation.
