The RCMP is warning the public about a scam that originates with a phone call, but can lead to illegal access to home computers and banking information.
RCMP in Placentia received a fraud complaint Friday, in which police say the complainant’s computer was hacked into and didn’t work properly.
Shortly after, according to the RCMP, a person called the home, pretending to be a representative of Microsoft and took control of the computer remotely. The person then gained access to the owners PayPal accounts and asked for their banking information. The complainant caught onto the scam in time to prevent the suspect from obtaining funds from the PayPal account.
The RCMP said the culprits were successful in obtaining a sum of money from the complainant’s VISA account.
The Placentia RCMP is advising the public not to have any dealings with unknown persons with regards to their personal computer equipment. Such scams can be reported to the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca
