Main Canada Post office closed on Xmas Eve in St. John’s

The largest Canada Post retail outlet in St. John’s did not open on Christmas Eve, and a local president with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is blaming management for failing to have a plan in place to provide relief to staff.

“They knew it was coming, they knew it was a busy week, and they didn’t put the staff in place that they required,” said Mike McDonald, president of CUPW Local 126.

According to McDonald, two of the three front-line workers at Station A on Kenmount Road were scheduled to take Christmas Eve off. McDonald said the third person used an “urgent personal day” Tuesday.

McDonald said the union typically meets with management to discuss the Christmas season and potential staffing issues.

“This year when we sat down and talked, we asked what was happening with the retail, and there was no consultation whatsoever with regards to ... retail staffing,” he said.

Last year on Christmas Eve, McDonald said Station A operated with one retail staff person who was swamped with work as a steady stream of customers showed up looking for packages. Some interactions verged on harassment, he added, from people who became upset to learn overdue packages had not arrived or were not available for pick up.

“Most times, Station A absolutely becomes swamped with people coming up to the main building wanting to know if their packages are there that didn’t make it out to them. People are coming to get the last-minute stuff from their boxes in the station.”

Given that experience, Canada Post should have prioritized having a plan in place to provide service on Christmas Eve, according to McDonald.

“If you know Christmas is coming and you know that you need the extra staff, why wouldn’t you make them available,” he asked rhetorically.

Canada Post recently announced plans to eliminate home mail delivery in urban centres.

    Before anyone judges what delivery people make , you should know the real facts. The ones that deliver to supermail boxes make less than $16 hr. and have to use their own vehicles. Canada Post management makes over $40 hr...C.E.O. makes over $700,000 per year .Also they didn't hold anyone for ransom , they were locked out by management so that the gov. could order them back even though they we not the ones that walked. Get it right people , know before you judge .

    Bring on UPS! Good bye Canada Post! As for the workers the demand will still be there but living high on the hog might be a distant memory! Holding Canadians up for ransom does not bring support!

    This debacle will not do either the company any good. There are alternatives for customers to go to. Remember that next time you want to send a package.

    I guess the management thought Santa and the elves would take care of delivery. Perhaps that's the same fantasy they have about how the elderly and infirm will get their mail when they cut out home delivery.

    Unfortunately the solution was they should have learned their lesson from last year and restricted any leave on Christmas Eve. Especially since it's the busiest time of the year for the post office. They could still close early like most business thus relieving the stress left on the sole employee left to man the counter. We have leave restrictions at our work an we know we cannot take it off as this was the busiest times of the year based on previous sales periods.

    Blame Canada Post or the UNION?? I blame the union and the boys knew how busy they would be on Christmas Eve so took the day off (with pay, I bet). I figure the plan was to bring in some of their buddies and get them double time or more!!! No wonder Canada Post needs to make major cuts to the work force. . I have been getting my mal in a super mailbox for 7 years and it works great as I pass it 3 or 4 times a day.

    And they wonder why they are losing billions, management should be fired and replaced with people who care about there clients. The managers are sitting home on there butts, Christmas eve, while we try to pickup our Christmas packages, Shame on them!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am sure they will try and blame the union somehow!!!!!
