News that the Bannerman Park Loop in St. John’s was officially open to the public Christmas Eve may have gone unnoticed to many, but there was plenty of evidence Thursday to indicate the new outdoor ice rink will be a popular wintertime attraction.

Approximately 200 people were using the rink by mid-afternoon on Boxing Day. Weather conditions were idyllic for those looking to handle a few laps on ice skates, with the sun shining brightly on a cool but not freezing day.

According to one skater with a Global Positioning System unit handy, six laps of the loop are equivalent to approximately one mile.

The loop was constructed at a cost of $1.8 million, with expenses shared 50-50 by the City of St. John’s and the Bannerman Park Foundation.

It's nice to see that money is being spent on a project that everyone can enjoy...even the middleclass.

Because the middle class deserves areas like this, anyone needing NL Housing has obviously made some poor choices in life.

We visited and skated today at dusk... Absolutely amazing! Thank you to the city, the committee and the people who pushed this project until complete! Great addition and fun for all ages!
