A container ship in trouble off Newfoundland

The latest reports from the Joint Task Force Atlantic are that the crew of the container ship MCS Monterey are still assessing the damage to their ship.

Capt. Peter Ryan of the Joint Task Force Atlantic says a call came in late Sunday morning of a 24 crew vessel that was in distress. The ship was 34 nautical miles off Portugal Cove South at that time.

“There were reports that she had a problem with her hull and that she was in danger of breaking apart,” says Capt. Ryan.

Two cormorant helicopters and a hercules aircraft were tasked with the rescue. The helicopters were on the scene by early afternoon.

“As we speak people are being lifted off that vessel in distress,” says Ryan.

Four non-essential crew have been airlifted from the vessel. CCGS Teleost is also tasked with the situation that Capt. Ryan describes as being constantly evaluated. Coordination of the rescue efforts are continuing at this time.
