A hefty blizzard that dumped almost 40 centimetres of snow on St. John's by early Saturday morning is keeping businesses closed and also impacting services in the metro area.

A blizzard in the St. John's metro area is making life a little bit harder for most residents.
The City of St. John's advised that all its recreation facilities would remain closed until 12 p.m. A further update was expected at 11 a.m.
Since that announcement was first made, a massive outage has left most of Newfoundland without power. Shortly after 11 a.m., the city advised that those facilities would remain closed for the day.
Several flights due to arrive in St. John's overnight did not make it in, and there are more than a dozen cancelled flight departures as of Saturday morning.
Metrobus services were unavailable Saturday morning because of the storm. A further announcement is due at 12 p.m.
GoBus Accessible Transit was not on the roads to start the morning. According to a post from the City of St. John's offical Twitter account, that service will stay suspended until weather and road conditions improve. GoBus service ended early Friday night due to the weather.
The Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility was due to close at 12:30 p.m. for the remainder of the day because of the power outage.
The Newfoundland Liquor Corporation has delayed opening its stores in St. John's, Mount Pearl and Conception Bay South because of the winter storm. They were expected to reopen at 12 p.m., though that plan was put in place before the power outage.
The storm has also impacted delivery of the Weekend Telegram. Its delivery is delayed due to blizzard conditions.
A blizzard warning remained in effect Saturday morning for the St. John's area and vicinity, Avalon Peninsula north, and the Bonavista Peninsula. Wind warnings are in effect for many other parts of Newfoundland, with Bay St. George RCMP reporting that roads in Stephenville are slippery and subject to whiteout conditions.
