A news release notes that installation of new meters has been completed in the Churchill Square area and on Water Street.

Today, staff began replacing the meters on Duckworth Street.

The city says it will keep residents updated through social media on what streets are

scheduled for installation.

“Although the issues that arose after the Canadian Mint changed the composition of their coins were unfortunate, we have used this situation as an opportunity to upgrade and modernize our parking meter systems,” say Coun. Bernard Davis, chairman of the Community Services and Housing Standing Committee.

“Last week we began installing new parking meters throughout the city replacing the current models which are unable to accept new loonies and toonies.”

The release says there are multiple payment options with the new meters including credit cards, coins and park cards. The new meters will work with current and future coins issued by the Canadian Mint.

“It is important to note for those residents who use our convenient ParkCards they will have to come in to the Access St. John’s Citizen Service Centre to exchange their cards for a new one,” Davis said. “The new cards are now available for purchase and balances remaining on old ParkCards can be transferred to your new card at no additional charge.”

Once the new meters are installed the new parking rate will be 25 cents per 10 minutes, or $1.50 per hour.
