Work-from-home option available to Sykes employees
A St. John’s call centre is closing its doors for good, but it employees are being offered the option of working from home.
Sykes Enterprises purchased ICT Group in 2009 and has operated from offices in the Torbay Road Mall ever since. On Tuesday, the company informed its employees of the decision to close the St. John’s site.
A spokeswoman for the multinational corporation, which currently has operations in 23 countries, said the company “will be consolidating work done” at its St. John’s site into SYKES Home.
Business at its Torbay Road Mall location will cease April 4.
“We believe the work-from-home model will be an emerging trend for some of our clients,” the Sykes Enterprises spokeswoman said in an email to The Telegram.
As of Friday’s deadline, The Telegram had not been able to confirm whether Sykes is also closing its location in Corner Brook at the Valley Mall.
According to its website, SYKES Home employs 5,000 people across North America.
The setup requires employees to have a home computer with a Windows operating system, an Internet connection that is not wireless, a landline and a headset. The employee is responsible for all associated costs.
The spokeswoman did not respond to questions asking how many employees work at the St. John’s site or how many would be able to take advantage of the work-from-home option.
When ICT Group first opened its St. John’s location in 2002, it became the company’s third call centre in Newfoundland and Labrador, following in the footsteps of locations in Corner Brook and Carbonear. A Telegram story on the opening of the St. John’s location said the call centre would provide 1,000 jobs.
The call centre in Carbonear closed in 2008, one year before Sykes Enterprises purchased ICT Group.
Between 2001 and 2006, ICT Group received $1.6 million in wage rebates from the province under an incentive program.
