Mayor Dennis O’Keefe helped raise the Pride flag at St. John’s City Hall today along with members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in a show of support in conjunction with the opening of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Such ceremonies are occurring across the country today.

Earlier today, the Pride flag was raised at Confederation Building in St. John's as a sign of the provincial government’s support for human rights regardless of sexual orientation.

Also participating in the ceremony at Confederation Building were Justice Minister Darin King, Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Steve Kent, and Environment and Conservation Minister Joan Shea.

So happy to see support. This is not only for our athletes, but for everyone dealing with people who constantly hate on them for being bisexual, gay, trans gender, etc. The main point should be that everyone is equal. Why cant we all just get along? The less time people spend on being negative about such issues, the faster we can move on to bigger, better, and more important things.

Crazy, the flag wasn't rasied by citizens. It was rasied by city staff who recieved a request from citizens (the people and taxpayers). The mayor himself endorsed the flag days ago on the news.

I don't agree with this and am disappointed that the public was not consulted before raising a rainbow flag on public property. This is a very sensitive issue and we should not tolerate special agendas being forced upon the general public. If you're homosexual then so be it, I'm not worried about it,but please stop trying to push your agenda on everyone else. The Olympics are about sport and not sexuality. Leave it to St.John's to try to out politically correct every other city in Canada.

Agenda?! Oh, the anti-bigotry agenda. Yes. Well, evolution happens. Apparently Rob Ford would approve as he just orderded the flag removed from the Toronto City Hall.

You mean like the straight Christian agenda or the homophobic agenda? Maybe they should take those rainbow banners off the schools... I mean crosses.

Focus should be on the Olympics right now. These participants trained long and hard for years to get to this utmost goal. There is a time and place for everything.

The Russian position flies in the very face of what the Olympics are suppose to be all about! Sadly there are people who trained long and hard and were not allowed to participate! Never mind those who might have wanted to be spectators! Not much point raising a flag when everybody has gone home!
