Lay’s no longer producing it’s Do Us a Flavour contest winning chips

If you are on the hunt for Maple Moose flavoured Lay’s chips, you may be out of luck — the flavour has been discontinued.

Port aux Basques resident Jerome Battiste has been a fan of Lay’s Maple Moose chips since the company launched the flavour last year.

In the past few weeks, he’s had a difficult time finding his favourite chip flavour.

“I searched every store in town,” said Battiste. “I couldn’t find them anywhere.”

Battiste said he called the 1-800 phone number listed on Lay’s website and was told they are indeed off the shelf, however, they wouldn’t tell him why.

Tyler LeFrense knows why. The Isle aux Morts resident won the Lay's Do Us a Flavour contest in October after suggesting the name Maple Moose.

A few weeks ago he sat in a teleconference with the company, who had called to tell him they were being discontinued.

“I can’t say too much,” said LeFrense. “But I can tell you that they said sales were really down on that flavour and they decided to pull them off the shelves.”

LeFrense is a little disappointed with the decision, as are lovers of the flavour.

He said a friend of his just found them out west for the first time, which would almost indicate they haven’t reached all over Canada before being pulled.

The chips were on the shelves in stores just a little over six weeks.

The Lay’s Do Us a Flavour contest boasted a $50,000 reward, plus one per cent of sales thereafter.

LeFrense said he certainly appreciated all the support he received with the contest, and for helping to put the small town of Isle aux Morts on the map.

“If you enjoyed them, it’s very appreciated, and I thank you for your support throughout it all,” said LeFrense.

A spokeswoman for PepsiCo Canada for Lay's Canada said in an email Lay’s regularly rotates and updates the range of flavours offered to consumers on store shelves.

“At this point in time, Maple Moose is not being produced,” she said. “But we are proud that it remains a flavour in our Lay’s potato chip portfolio and are thrilled about the enthusiasm consumers have shown for it, both during and after the Do Us a Flavour contest.”

As far as LeFrense’s winnings go, the company said Maple Moose was considered the most popular by voters, and remains our celebrated winner of the Lay’s Do Us a Flavour contest from 2013.

Low sales may have been Causes by not having them on the shelves, as here in Nova Scotia my Family and I haven't been able to find them since the contest ended back in October!!!!!!! :( Can't buy what's not available for sale to the public, no support from the Vendors/ Merchandisers'

I haven't personally tried the chips however my son loves them and asked for a bag yesterday; so just because you dont like them dont down them; some people really do. Thats your opinion and you're entitled to it but dont speak for everyone. Tyler did very well and you should still be very proud of yourself no matter what. According to above comments they weren't promoted very well and that is sad. Hope it wasn't just a marketing ply like it looks to be!!!!!

i am a store owner and they were only offered to my store juring the contest time ,never saw a bag once the contest was over , so my customers that liked them or even costomers that wanted to try the winning chip never even got a chance to try them , maybe sales were really down because it wasn't avaible to be bought.

Hmm! $50,000.00 + 1% of nothing = $50,000.00 Pretty cheap marketing ploy by today's standard! I suppose the perogy flavor also met a similar fate!
