Accused murderer’s family members say inmates targeted him in attack

The violent brawl that broke out at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary (HMP) in St. John’s on Sunday was an orchestrated attack on Kenny Green, his family members told The Telegram.

“They jumped him with shanks,” Green’s father, Ken Green Sr., said in a telephone interview Monday.

“Kenny’s best kind, though. He’s taking it all in stride. He’s laughing about it, actually.”

Police are saying little about what happened because they are still investigating, but they were called to the prison on Forest Road in St. John’s at around 4:30 p.m.

They said a number of inmates were involved in the altercation, but wouldn’t mention names. Some of them were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Sources say the injuries were stab wounds. All have been treated and are back at the prison.

Green Sr. said it happened in the prison’s chapel, where a group of inmates gathered for a weekly Sunday service.

Three Salvation Army clergymen were said to have been in the chapel when the fight broke out, but they weren’t injured.

Green Sr. said his son’s injuries were minor.

“He only got three stitches in his side,” Green Sr. said. “The other crowd — nine of them — got the worst of it.”

Green Jr. was first jailed in March of last year, when he arrested in connection with the beating death of 47-year-old Joey Whalen.

Whalen died in hospital on March 17, 2013, two days after he was reportedly beaten at a notorious drug house on Tessier Place in downtown St. John’s. The 35-year-old has pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree murder.

Green Sr. believes his son was falsely accused of the crime. He added that the HMP attack was likely in retaliation for an incident that happened years ago involving another man, now an inmate at the prison, who was at the chapel at the time.

“This has been going on for years,” said Green Sr. “(The man) got the shit kicked out of him and he’s blaming Kenny for it. It’s over bullshit.”

Green’s girlfriend and the mother of his child, Danielle Collins, said Green Jr. called her immediately after the HMP incident.

“He’s really good,” she said, when asked how Green was doing. “He was laughing about it.

“He didn’t even know he was cut until a little while after. He didn’t want to go to the hospital, but it was mandatory.

“But he did really well, considering there were nine or 10 of them (who attacked him). Kenny knows how to handle himself.”

Shortly after the incident, Collins wrote on her Facebook page: “2 against 9 and my man still held his f---ing own... F---ing punks think you can take him you got a surprise didn’t ya... You looked like fools and hope you enjoyed getting your head jumped on while my man was laughing at it... I talked to the guards and heard the way it went down LOL St. John’s mob my ass.”

Collins said Green told her there was only one guard in the chapel at the time. Once the fight started, several other guards ran in, she said.

Collins said she found it strange that there was only one guard there, because the staff were aware there was tension towards Green and that he would likely be targeted.

She said Green said he was attacked shortly after they got to the chapel.

“Kenny said one of the guys pulled out a shank and said to him, ‘Let’s do it.’ Kenny said OK and that was it.”

Collins said Green spent 10 months on the prison’s Special Handling Unit (SHU), in which inmates are separated from the rest of the population.

He was released following a bail review on Jan. 17, but was taken into custody again the next day when he was spotted at a restaurant that serves alcohol, a breach of one of his bail conditions.

Collins said Green has been with the general population ever since.

Collins said she doesn’t worry about Green, but admitted she felt better when he was on the SHU. She said she plans to visit with Green Jr. on Tuesday, once the lockdown has been lifted.

Another Internal Review? How many do we need? How much are these workers paid to put their lives on the line every day? I guess stab wounds are not considered serious injury!

Shank is a verb. To shank. The noun is shiv. So the correct form of this poor guy's quote is 'They jumped him with shivs' or to be more syntactically correct 'they shanked him with their shivs.' The more you knoooooow.

Two points to Ridiculous... 1. Nobody on this forum brought his family into anything. They brought themeselves in by getting on both Facebook and the news media, and then talking about this childish nonsense. 2. Nobody here said that his family is not trying to be supportive. What people are saying is that they are supporting him in a bad way and that they have poor priorities.

I say they were lucky no guards or clergy were hurt. They are innocent people just doing their jobs. I remember a few years back when we were fighting for radios ,vests,oc spray and batons and were told we didn't need them and it cost too much. Now you would'nt go through the gate without them. My thoughts are with the staff who walk the toughest beat of any worker in NL. Take care and be safe all!

Retired Guard, Well said. These scumbags (father, son, and girlfriend) are treated like heroes when the ordinary law abiding citizens are left to their own devices. The whole system is designed so they can abuse every right they have, and very few of them ever change. They never take responsibility for their actions and just blame everybody else. They just get older. It's time to change our priorities and focus on people who are actually trying to contribute.

    February 11, 2014 - 11:21

In all honesty , if one of your own was in jail & got jumped would you not be happy that he survived & as for the child , why bring her or him into this, no one has the right to talk about his family in any way .. You won't know her or the child , what Kenny has done was wrong but as for his family they didn't so nothing wrong , but try & support their son , boyfriend whatever. People are so quick to judge but if it was someone else's family member I wonder how you would all re act & by everyone making the comments they are you think you are making things any better.

  • Hurting His Chances
    February 11, 2014 - 08:58

His family members do not realize how badly they are hurting his chances of ever getting out of the pen. They should be trying to present themselves as supportive, responsible, and positive influences on his life. You know, so if he gets out one day, he might have people around to help keep him on the right track. Instead, these family members get on the media and howl about what a survivor and tough guy he is? You would think from their comments that he is competing in Sochi along with Kaetlyn Osmond!

GF sounds like a sweetheart. So Green handled 9. Can he handle 15? Can he handle 20? If he loses the next fight, I guess the family will blame it on the guards and sue somebody. I wonder how GF supports herself and child??

Yes, have to agree...it's going to be a tough time for the child later in life if things stay the way they are in the family. Hopefully, someone will open their eyes and realize what damage is being done to the child and try to change it - if not, there will be another Jr. in the system in years to come. So sad......

What a nice family to grow up in. (chest out, head held high). My son/husband while in jail on murder beat up 9 other inmates who ambushed him in prison church. What a nice headline for your child to read later in life.

Like father like son. I fully understand now why there is a "jr." after reading daddy's statements. Sounds like the "old man" is proud of his punk son's accomplishments. BTW, the girlfriend is a very close second to the "old man" with her babbling. Feel sorry for the child. Has one mountain to climb in that so called family.

"They jumped him with shanks". 'Shanks'? ' Shank' refers to either the part of the leg between the knee and ankle or the 'shank' of the evening. Why do people assume that law abiding people are familiar with prison jargon?

lmao don't know were you get your info from but you are wrong shank, shanked orgin: prison slang A homemade knife. made out of scrap of metal found anywhere and sharpend like a knife. and bottom tightly wrapped with a cloth as a handle. shanked. to be stabbed by a homemade knife. "CrookedEye John" got shanked up.. I heard he got hit with a rusty shank.

Sounds like there's another one on the way in to our justice system.......with a family making statements like that, and a GF doing the same, it's no doubt that this cycle will continue with criminality. Talk about making a target bigger, statements like that won't get you favors. Sounds to me like they are dealing with well educated people here in the media.
