An American citizen travelling from Chicago to London has found himself making an unplanned visit to the Gander lockup.

Just after midnight Saturday night the Gander RCMP received a compliant from Gander International Airport that an American Airlines Boeing 777 en route from Chicago to London was making an emergency landing due to an unruly passenger.

The passenger was reported to be intoxicated and violent and was disobeying the commands of the flight crew and captain. The captain deemed the male to be a danger to the aircraft and its passengers and diverted the flight to Gander.

RCMP arrested a 35 year old American citizen for causing a disturbance aboard an aircraft and mischief for damaging property belonging to the airline.

The male will appear in provincial court in Gander on Tuesday morning for a bail hearing.

The Airline continued on its journey once police had removed the male and spoken with its flight crew.
