After a lifetime of working hard and changing careers to continue to make ends meet, Mary Beaudoin and Peter O’Quinn of Corner Brook are now Set for Life.

Mary Beaudoin and Peter O’Quinn of Corner Brook were announced Tuesday as the latest winners of the Atlantic Lottery Corp.’s Set for Life game.

The seniors, who moved back to the city from Ontario about three years ago, accepted their lump-sum payment of $675,000 Tuesday after Beaudoin scratched the winning ticket last weekend.

She picked up two of the tickets during a trip to Walmart last week, put them in her purse and headed for home. She had no idea that $675,000 — the lump sum payment they chose to take instead of the $1,000 per week for 25 years — was just sitting there for days.

After watching a movie Saturday night, she went to her purse and was reminded that her chance at big winnings was unscratched.

“It’s unbelievable,” Beaudoin said Tuesday at the Marble Inn Resort in Steady Brook, where the official ceremony took place.

“It’s really not something you can put your finger on, because you always see other people win it. You think one of these days it is going to be our turn. It is here and now, and it’s still ... it really happened?”

O’Quinn, a Corner Brook native, had the same reaction, and didn’t believe his partner when she told them they had won — and won big.

This province has been on a winning streak when it comes to Set for Life. A news release from the Atlantic Lottery Corp. said that in 2012, four of the five top prizes awarded in the game were claimed in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Two of the four top prizes were awarded here in 2013, while Beaudoin and O’Quinn’s win marked the second of five possible Set for Life prizes this year — both of which have been won in Newfoundland.

Saturday night, after she convinced O’Quinn that she’d scratched the winning ticket, Beaudoin did a celebration dance with her granddaughter.

The couple returned to Corner Brook after 45 years in Windsor, Ont., to help care for Beaudoin’s 91-year-old mother.
