The man arrested in connection with the shooting near the Field House at Memorial University appeared in provincial court in St. John’s this afternoon.
Justin Chipman, 26, faces more than a dozen charges, including assault with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer, dangerous driving, theft, possessing stolen property and property damage.
The case was set over until Thursday to allow lawyers time to review the file.
The 26-year-old was picked up by police following the incident that happened around 7 p.m. Tuesday. Plain-clothed officers from the RNC were conducting surveillance in the Field House parking lot at the time.
Police say officers attempted to arrest Chipman, who was reportedly breaking into cars, but he ran from police and got into a stolen vehicle, driving dangerously.
One officer discharged his weapon.
The suspect vehicle was located shortly afterwards in the area of Keane Place, off Freshwater Road.
It was on fire.
One officer did sustain minor injuries in the incident.
Investigators from the RCMP are taking over the investigation into the actions of the RNC officers’ actions in relation to the incident.
