The RCMP is seeking the public’s help to identify a man who first tried to remove, then tried to pry open, an ATM inside the Foodland store in Whitbourne about 10:37 p.m. Sunday.
When officers from the Whitbourne RCMP detachment responded Sunday night to an alarm triggered at the ATM site, they found one of the doors to porch area of Foodland smashed and the ATM inside it damaged.
A review of video surveillance revealed that an older model, dark-coloured pickup had pulled into the parking lot of the business and a stocky male wearing dark clothing and a balaclava/ski mask, got out of the passenger side of the truck.
The RCMP says the suspect went to the door of Foodland while the truck parked out of view of the camera. The suspect smashed the glass of the door and, once inside, the suspect used a crowbar to try, unsuccessfully, to remove the ATM from the floor. The suspect then tried, again unsuccessfully, to open the ATM in an attempt to get the money inside.
Eventually, the suspect left and the pickup pulled up, and then it drove off towards the highway.
Anyone with information relating to this incident is asked o contact Whitbourne RCMP Detachment at (709) 759-2600 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
