The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE) and the provincial government have reached a tentative agreement for corrections officers, NAPE announced in a news release.

A news release notes the agreement includes a five per cent increase over the term of the agreement, consisting of a two per cent increase in Year 3, and a three per cent increase in Year 4.
As part of the agreement, employees will receive a one-time, pro-rated payment of $1,400.
“This tentative agreement is in keeping with our government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, while also recognizing our valued public employees,” Finance Minister Charlene Johnson said,
The tentative agreement shares the same framework as that reached with other NAPE groups, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, and the Association of Allied Health Professionals.

Carol Furlong, president of NAPE, said there was considerable discussion at the bargaining table over operational issues, which have now been resolved.
The tentative agreement is based on the template agreement for public sector workers, which includes significant increases in shift differential and weekend premiums, as well as improvements in contract language.
Ratification votes are being scheduled for next week.
