The provincial government has announced that corrections officers will be carrying pepper spray at all times, and metal detectors will be installed at “strategic locations” within Her Majesty’s Penitentiary.
The announcement comes after a series of security incidents over the past several months, and a public protest by correctional officers in front of the prison in February.
“I recently met with representatives of corrections staff who brought forward some ideas on how we could make improvements in our correctional facilities, including Her Majesty’s Penitentiary,” Justice Minister Darin King said in a news release. “With the assistance of Superintendent Graham Rogerson, I carefully examined their recommendations and as a result, several initiatives will be implemented that will enhance safety and security.”
The government has also announced that they’re buying two new transport vehicles for the prison.
The news release gave no indication on how much this will cost.
