Cathy Bennett, a St. John’s businesswoman who last year was in the running to become Liberal leader, will represent the Liberals in the upcoming Virginia Waters provincial byelection.

Cathy Bennett.

Bennett first expressed her desire to run in the Virginia Waters district last fall when the seat was still held by former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Kathy Dunderdale. Dunderdale stepped down as premier in January and resigned from her seat in the House of Assembly at the end of February.

Bennett was the lone candidate to seek the Liberal nomination, according to a news release issued Saturday.

On Thursday, the NDP announced former St. John’s city councillor and visual artist Sheilagh O’Leary will represent the party in the Virginia Waters byelection.

The governing Progressive Conservatives do not have a candidate in place and have not put out a call for nominations in the district.

A date for the byelection has not been set. Interim-Premier Tom Marshall has 60 days to call a byelection from the date of Dunderdale’s resignation.

Organizations: NDP, Progressive Conservatives

Geographic location: Virginia, Newfoundland and Labrador

Cathy Bennett declares that Kathy Dunderdale is arrogant and should resign her seat. Now, Cathy Bennett demands the Premier call a byelection immediately. If Cathy Bennett needs to see the definition of arrognce she only needs to look in the mirror.

I wouldn't vote for her in a million years

If people didn't want her as a leader, what makes her think they would want her as an MHA? She couldn't even stay to support and congratulate the leader she is running under when he was elected. I hope Newfoundlanders can see through her game and vote for ABC...anyone but Cathy!!

So tell me how a women who claims she has to use foreign workers to remain in business thinks that she has the stuff to stop the out migration of nl talent. Her business solution was to fly in help, is that her solution for young Newfoundlanders who face the prospect of moving away from family and friends to get proper paying employment. Or is she going to be a real leader and do the right thing for her workers?

Sorry I can't support anyone who bring in foreign workers, and program then like robot. at the same time leaving our young people on the fence, by using our tax dollars to feature their own nest. Sorry just can't do it...

let's see if an observer of the passing parade got the motivation correct: is it for which party will I run, or which party can I run, i.e., the 1%Liberals or the 1%Conservatives?

@ Pierre Neary, Don't agree with you. .Cathy is playing both side of the fence, One if the PC's don't get in, And if the people of VW do vote for her as MHA. She will make sure the Muskrat Falls will continue with the project, Remember you heard it from me first..

Just because we heard it from you first does not mean it's credible. The main thing is to shut out O'Leary. If Bennett wins, O'Leary won't be able to complain about no women being represented or elected

Bennett takes her political advice from Siobhan Coady. This will end in tears for Ms. Bennett.

Ms. Bennett has fought a leadership campaign and it now going to contest a by election for the Liberals. I think she has proven herself as true Liberal.

There something wrong with this byelection, Concerning Cathy Bennett. Its seem the Liberal call it fast, with a short dead line for candidate's to come forwards, Its giving the people the impression the liberal are up to something ...Question is, what can it be? I wonder do it have anything to do with the roomer on the street, Concerning what Ball got plan for Deer Lake, Or do its have something to do with their infighting? Lets look closer, Cathy past over almost six thousand dollars to the PC's party, while only pasting over less then six hundred dollars to Liberal. Something smell here, and the taxpayers are going to have to pay if the Liberal form the next government.

This is gross. Talk about the PCs yet call a nomination like this? Monday after KD steps down on the Friday? What was the hurry? PCs have no candidate yet and they call the byelection. Oh right, to make sure Grimace gets the nomination with no time for anyone else to take a run. My stomach is already turning

Bennett supported Bill 29 and the Nalcor secret decision-making process for Muskrat Falls. If I wanted PC I can vote for one: not a PC in liberal colours.

Exactly. This woman was a long time Tory supporter and sat on the board of Nalcor. Are we expected to believe she simply saw the light on day and became a born-again Liberal?

Bill 29 does not apply to muskrat falls...but hey why let the truth get in the way of some good ol' lies ....

One thing you can say about Cathy Bennett is that she isn't running because she needs a job
