Cathy Bennett, a St. John’s businesswoman who last year was in the running to become Liberal leader, will represent the Liberals in the upcoming Virginia Waters provincial byelection.

Bennett first expressed her desire to run in the Virginia Waters district last fall when the seat was still held by former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Kathy Dunderdale. Dunderdale stepped down as premier in January and resigned from her seat in the House of Assembly at the end of February.
Bennett was the lone candidate to seek the Liberal nomination, according to a news release issued Saturday.
On Thursday, the NDP announced former St. John’s city councillor and visual artist Sheilagh O’Leary will represent the party in the Virginia Waters byelection.
The governing Progressive Conservatives do not have a candidate in place and have not put out a call for nominations in the district.
A date for the byelection has not been set. Interim-Premier Tom Marshall has 60 days to call a byelection from the date of Dunderdale’s resignation.
