A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a man convicted of dousing a couple with bear mace.

Michael John Rakai was a no show when his case was called in provincial court in St. John's this morning.

The 34-year-old was scheduled to have his sentencing hearing.

Defence lawyer Scott Hurley requested to withdraw from the case.

Judge Mike Madden agreed. Hurley said Rakai did not take part in his pre-sentence report interview and that it's believed Rakai has fled the jurisdiction.

Rakai was found guilty in December 2013 of several charges, including assault with a weapon, uttering threats and breaching court orders.

The charges were laid as a result of an incident that happened April 8, 2013, when Rakai was found to have attacked a couple with bear mace and a hatchet outside the woman's home on Merrymeeting Road in the centre of the city.

I just love how all these losers are released on bail. This is why I would not want to be a cop....you spend countless hours investigating, charging to only see these idiots released on bail. James Bond said it best, ''I thought the world would be better off with one less bomb maker'' - I like that train of thought.
