Former Liberal MHA Danny Dumaresque says dirty fuel being fed into the Holyrood power plant may have been the cause of power outages earlier this year.

Dumaresque,  an intervenor in the Public Utilities Board (PUB) inquiry into the January blackouts, is talking about the fuel being burned at the Holyrood power plant, and specifically about aluminum and silicon in the fuel.

Dumaresque says NL Hydro has been using the wrong fuel at Holyrood, which may have contributed to the blackouts in January.

The $800-million contract to buy fuel from a Swiss company did not include maximum levels of aluminum and silicon in the fuel.

Too much aluminum and silicon can cause clogging and damage to equipment, Dumaresque said.

Dumaresque said he'll be pressing for more information on this issue.

Organizations: Public Utilities Board, NL Hydro

Geographic location: Holyrood

  • Why do we enter into contracts with controversial corporations like Trafigura?
    March 19, 2014 - 08:41

Today I listened to a report by Azzo Rezori on CBC Radio on Trafigura the corporation we are utilizing to obtain Oil for the Hollyrood Hydro generating station. I was shocked to my core by what I heard. Please read the article on Trafigura in the address below. You, too, might be shocked by the Controversies this Corporation was involved in long before we contracted to receive Oil from them. When the evidence is available so readily on the controversial dealings of a Corporation like this one, why do our Newfoundland and Labrador politicians enter into contracts with such corporations? And why do our government not include the necessary protection clauses in the contract to protect us from the damages that occur such as what occurred at the Hollyrood Generating Station? I am shocked to the core at the bad governance that we Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have had to endure because of the careless attitudes of those we elected into government. We are always Shafted by every deal they enter into. And that has been the case since we entered Confederation in 1949. This has to STOP!!!!!! What is the problem? Have they all been STUPID in their governance or have they all been Corrupt? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trafigura_AG

Excerpt from April, 2013 PUB Order:---- "IT IS THEREFORE ORDERED THAT:......... 2. Hydro shall file a report in relation to the root cause of the failure of Unit 1 at the Holyrood Thermal Generating Station on or before June 30, 2013"----- Has anywone see the root cause report?

Yes god forbid someone want any accountability in NL. At the bare minimum Dumaresque just showed us 100 million dollars that dirty fuel cost us but I guess that is chump change to some of you? I guess we don't have anywhere else to put 100 million dollars in NL. Give your heads a shake and take a look at the information, keyboard warriors.

And nobody has any reason to doubt the word of a failed opposition politician. Does Dumaresque have any professional qualifications that would support his analysis.? How sure are we that this fuel oil took gas turbine generating units offline in January?

Keep it up Danny! The Zealots are out in full force. You must be on to something. They have everything to say, yet still have no answers to the questions! If the Pc's had 5 Frank Coleman's I won't vote for them. Open your eyes NLer's

How then, FRED PENNER, do you explain this quote from Nalcor (in relation to the need for a new transmission line from Bay D'Espoir to the Western Avalon)---- “Recall that due to transmission line constraints the existing transmission system limits the transfer of load…at Western Avalon Terminal Station leaving non-Holyrood generation underutilized” ---

  • What an Embarrassment!

Oh my ------- Danny is grandstanding again! If he was truly interested in exploring if the fuel contributed to the outages he would be dealing with this at the PUB and not in the media. From his "news" conference, according to Danny, we have a DIESEL plant at Holyrood? He has NO idea what he is talking about and has NO understanding of how Holyrood - a STEAM plant - operates.

    • Danny Dumaresque is a God-send!
      March 18, 2014 - 12:15

Without Danny Dumaresque and people like him, who want good accounting and transparency from the government that runs our affairs, our province would be worse off now and in the future. Hopefully the crooks who are running our affairs will listen to what Danny and people of his ilk are revealing and will revert to the honesty that is expected under a true Democracy to run our provincial affairs. All one has to do is to take an accounting of all the natural resources of Newfoundland and Labrador that have been developed thus far and see where they are percolating vibrant economies. You will find that none of the economies are percolating in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In my opinion that is a prime sign of corruption and a lack of caring on behalf of those running our province's affairs for the electorate who voted them in over the past sixty-five years. By the way it was structured in a way that the economies are percolating for the politicians who were in power at the time of each resource development and those who they contracted with, who were only too enthused and happy to take on our precious and coveted natural resource to create vibrant economies with jobs for their area.

I don't have any idea what makes my car run but I damn well know it when some dirty fuel gets thru the filter. I say it again, wait and see what happens as this thing plays itself out. The response from Hydro was predictable but the story was worthy of news and telecasts for two days.

Mr Dumaresque, do you have a vehicle or hot air system at home, Because if you do, those items also have filter per unit, So that mean its open to failure.. TRUE.. Everyone around the world buy dirty fuel in one way or another...TRUE... You can change a filter or screen one day, couple days later fail,

The PC's and Nalcor have circled the wagons and I suspect will do anything to cover their mess and lack of good management. Anyone that tries to crack that secrecy is doing a good service. The CEO's and Vice Presidents should have been dismissed and replaced after the incident(s) this winter. Instead we get a PR Mouthpiece telling everyone what a great job they are doing by not using electricity.

  • Scapegoat Danny, not Danny!
    March 17, 2014 - 14:58

Wasn't it always a triumph for everyone from Gary Goobie, to Dunderdale to condemn the 'greenhouse emissions' for Bunco Bunker C fuel oil? It would be disingenuous of them to request cleaner burning fuel or $800 Million worth of upgrades for scrubbers, etc, as it went against propaganda. Don't forget, Al Chislett is trampling Pitcher Plants and stealing the gold of Salmonier cabin country (I heard he is trying to put a 1/4 Mi track at Whisky Pit for Nascar too) and all those pesky entrepreuners disrupting ecosystems and vista, like Zita Cobb. How many Pitcher Plants did she murder!! Scapegoat these evil people, not the good and kind PC government that interprets the will of God for us, and climate change on our behalf. No one here knows what a fuel contract is, com'on TelyJammer Grames flesh it out man!

  • Too many Dannys

Enough already; we have too many attention seekers named Danny in this province; Williams, Dumaresque, Breen...et all. Guys lets be a little more creative; only one Dan can be king and he's still running the show around here.

Thank you Mr. Dumaresque for trying to shed some light on the shady dealings going on in our province at the moment. The PC's are taking orders from Nalcor, and hiding behind Bill 29. An inquiry is needed after they are turfed to unravel the incestuous relationships between the PC's corporate overlords and the running of the provinces energy companies.

To John Smith : -- It hurts when you and your fellow PC buddies get caught hiding behind Bill 29. I guess you're not smart enough to realize that this blunder will cost you a hell of a lot of money either through taxes or on the power bill. People's eyes are starting to open up with this government. Oh, maybe a fire truck will help.

Quote from Nalcor:----"It is rare for the Holyrood Plant to operate at full capacity because Hydro is committed to minimizing the use of oil-fired generation. We do this by using our hydroelectric and wind sources as much as possible to offset generation at the Holyrood Plant." --------- Why then did they cancel the need to build a new transmission line from the west coast which would have permitted the use of existing underutilized capacity from the closure of 2 paper mills?

    • Fred Penner
      March 17, 2014 - 14:31

The capacity of the existing transmission lines is more than adequate for the purpose! Once again you demonstrate a superficial understanding.

Dolf, Maybe you should take your own advice. Your common theme on these posts, like other notable Liberals, is to immediately attack anything the Tories do. Then you make personal attacks and accusations on anybody who disagrees with you. Real mature.
