Two of six inmates suspected of being involved in a reported hostage taking at the province's largest prison last summer will be back in Newfoundland Supreme Court Friday.

They appeared in court this morning for what was supposed to be a trial but lawyers for Justin Wiseman and Adam Hayden told the judge that as a result of late disclosure, they are seeking to re-elect and have a preliminary inquiry.

The case is due back in court Friday to discuss the issue.

Inmates suspected in hostage taking at prison appear in court

Only two of six inmates suspected of being involved in a reported hostage taking at the province's largest prison last summer will be appearing in Newfoundland Supreme Court this morning for what's supposed to be a trial.

However, sources have indicated that Justin Wiseman and Adam Hayden may re-elect to have a preliminary inquiry instead.

Earlier this morning, two more of the men unexpectedly pleaded guilty to lesser charges in provincial court in St. John's. Julien Squires pleaded guilty to hostage taking and mischief by damaging property of Her Majesty's Penitentiary.

He's scheduled to be sentenced Monday.

A few hours later, Justin Hopkins pleaded guilty to mischief by damaging property.

On Wednesday, Justin Owens and Philip Hollihan both pleaded guilty to obstructing, interrupting or interferring with the lawful use or operation of property. Owens was sentenced to six months in jail. Hollihan will be sentenced April 15.

All six were also originally charged with hostage taking, stemming from an incident that happened Aug. 5.

Six of the inmates reportedly caused a riot, taking an inmate as hostage. The men demanded cigarettes in exchange for the hostage.

The damage to HMP was said to have been extensive, with broken doors and smashed windows.
