Transplanted Newfoundlander Cyra Belbin of Halifax has won the savoury snacks challenge on CBC-TV’s “Recipe to Riches,” meaning her very own Mexi Mac ’n’ Cheese Bites will be available at Dominion stores starting this weekend.
Belbin is a contestant on the reality culinary competition show, which invites Canadian home cooks to create and share their original favourite personal recipes with the country.

Each episode features a different food category, with the cooks competing for a weekly $25,000 prize.

The weekly winners will move on to the finale, competing for a $250,000 grand prize — this means Belbin’s Mexi Mac ‘n’ Cheese Bites will face off against dishes like Mini Raspberry Cheesecake Chocolate Cups, Jammin’ Jamaican Lobster Bisque, Grandpa’s Acadian Meat Pie and Italian Lollipops.

For her dish, Belbin created a crispy wheat and corn breading surrounding macaroni noodles, with cheddar and a touch of jalapeño.

Canadians can vote for their favourite recipe online at www.cbc.ca/recipetoriches until 1:30 a.m. Newfoundland time Monday. Belbin is scheduled to appear at Dominion on Blackmarsh Road to meet customers and well-wishers this Saturday.

Belbin’s not the only Newfoundlander seeing success with her culinary creations this week. Meghan O’Dea of Pi Gourmet Eatery in St. John’s is in Las Vegas for the Pizza Expo.

In the preliminary bake-off, O’Dea defeated 59 other chefs to capture the first place $500 prize in the international division, non-traditional category. Her winning pizza featured a hand-pressed crust with a pesto base, mozzarella and feta cheese, shaved lamb, mango and tomato chutney and chopped fresh chilis.

O’Dea was scheduled to compete against four other division winners for the $30,000 grand prize title Thursday afternoon.

Well done Cyra! Your recipe sounds delish, and I look forward to a taste. Perhaps your Dad can make it available at your family's store...

Congratulations Cyra. But I wonder, would you have been chosen to take part in this contest if you had said you were from Newfoundland Labrador?

Indeed she would have been chosen to take part. Ever been off the Island, Buddy?

If you watched this episode, Cyra did state that she was from Newfoundland, but currently living in Nova Scotia.

I wonder could a recipe for seal meat be entered in the contest?
