The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) is warning the public that icebreaking operations will be conducted in Middle Arm, Penguin Arm and Goose Arm in the Bay of Islands area Tuesday morning.
“CCG informs the local communities of the inherent risks of icebreaking activities,” a statement notes.
“CCG cannot have absolute control on the behaviour of the ice. Depending on various conditions, the ice can be pushed instead of broken and ice can crack or break far away from the location where the icebreaker is working.”
The CCG says icebreaking can cause risks for the safety of anyone who might be on the ice for any reason, whether walking on it, travelling over it by snowmobile or four-wheel vehicle, or other reasons.
