Elections Newfoundland and Labrador released its official tally for the Virginia Waters byelection Saturday, and Liberal candidate Cathy Bennett remains the winner by a narrow 40-vote margin.

The official tally, according to Election NL, is the same as what was reported on Wednesday night after the polls closed — Bennett got 1932 votes, PC candidate Danny Breen got 1892 and New Democrat Sheilagh O’Leary got 1021.

Shortly after Elections NL issued its official release, Breen send out a news release of his own, saying that he will not be requesting a recount.

“Danny would like to thank his family, friends, volunteers and supporters for their dedication and commitment to his campaign,” Breen’s release said. “He also offers his congratulations to both Cathy Bennett and Sheilagh O'Leary on their campaigns.”

A recount would only automatically have been triggered if the margin of victory was fewer than 10 votes.

Once she’s sworn in, Bennett will become the 12th member of the Liberal caucus in the House of Assembly. In the past year, the Liberal caucus has doubled in size; in the spring of 2013 they had six members.

Another sad day in N & L history...How come Ivy isn't on here, singing the Liberal red song.

Seriously do we even need so many MHAs for St. John's? What impact do they really have? Its not like smaller rural districts which need to fight and lobby for services such as road, water and sewer, infrastructure, business, etc. These things are going to happen in St. John's with or without the MHAs. Waste of money, one or two for St. John's is sufficient. One for Mt. Pearl, one for CBS too.

McBennett winning makes me sad. Maybe I will vote ndp after all. We'll see if she can hold on to her seat in the next election. Excuse me while I go make breakfast. With this news, it won"t be a very happy meal.
