A fire that started in the back corner of a Mount Pearl strip mall forced employees and customers at several businesses to wait outside while firefighters responded.

Multiple fire calls came in from the Commonwealth Avenue strip mall shortly before noon Monday, according to St. John’s Regional Fire Department Shift Supt. Don Byrne. The fire was found in the back corner of the building and dealt with quickly.

Firefighters used a ladder to get on the roof and cut a hole in it, as there were concerns the fire may have managed to get into the attic space of the building.

“We’re just going to concentrate on ensuring that there is no extension right now,” said Byrne, who added there was some minor smoke damage to the business adjacent to where the fire occurred.

A pharmacy occupies commercial space at the far end of the strip mall. Firefighters gained access through that business’ front door. Byrne said there were no additional safety risks given the nature of the business.

“It was confined to a washroom area, slash storage area and very quickly brought under control.”

Traffic heading north and south on Commonwealth Avenue was diverted near the strip mall to give fire crews access a water supply from across the road.

Three fire stations responded to the incident along with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and Newfoundland Power.
