Tom Newman, 59, went missing in the early morning hours Saturday. He was last seen snowmobiling on sea ice in the area of Beaver Cove in the Chimney Bay area near Roddickton.

After an extensive search effort and no sign of Newman, it is feared he may have gone over the edge of the ice.

The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team has been called to the area and will be commencing dive operations Tuesday morning.

The RCMP, along with the Long Range Ground Search and Rescue Team with the support of the Canadian Rangers, have been searching the Chimney Bay and Canada Bay areas near the communities of Roddickton and Englee since Saturday. Additional support came from Provincial Fire and Emergency Services in the way of air support from helicopters from 103 SAR based in Gander on Saturday, and a second air search with use of the Provincial helicopter provided by Universal Helicopters.

Searchers have checked the local trail systems, cabins and the shoreline in the area. They have also searched the ice, open water and high country.

Newman was operating a white Yamaha VK snowmobile.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP detachment in Roddickton or 1-800-709-7267.
