There is probably no more vulnerable time for a family than when a loved one dies - and a thief in St. John's allegedly took advantage of that over the weekend.
The man walked into Caul's Funeral Home on Lemarchant Road late Saturday afternoon and into a room where a wake was happening.

While the family members received guests, he took a purse belonging to one of them off a shelf and left with it.

"He pretended to be a visitor," funeral home manager John Anderson told The Telegram.

"There's not much I can say, really, other than it happened."

A picture of the alleged thief, taken from surveillance cameras, has been circulating online, with friends of the family asking for anyone who can identify him to contact the RNC.

RNC communications officer Const. Talia Murphy told The Telegram Monday the investigation is ongoing.

Scum of the Earth. Disgusting what some people are capable of. Sounds like he will be found soon enough.

So sick of hearing these types of stories. We need to make examples of people like this. When he is caught, he should be made to stand outside cauls with a sign informing everyone what he's done. The same should be said about those who dump garbage in the woods. Make them stand out in public and publically embarrass these louts ---clearly the walk of shame at the courthouse isn't enough!

You are so right in your comment JKB. The sad part about it is that the courts do have the ability to put these dirt bags through public humiliation but refrain from doing so.

Few cracks of the cane/whip ought to help too.
