Two men in central Newfoundland have been convicted and punished for illegally attempting to jig Atlantic salmon.

According to a Department of Fisheries and Oceans news release issued Tuesday, Greg Hancott and Rickey Elliott are both subject to a five years ban on recreational fishing within 50 metres of inland waters.

Hancott must also serve 30 days of house arrest and 18 months probation and pay off an outstanding fine from 1999 totalling $1,200.

Elliott, who like Hancott is from Campbellton in Notre Dame Bay, was fined $3,000.

Both men were convicted in a Gander courtroom for fishing within 23 metres downstream of a fishway canal, obstacle or leap, attempting to jig Atlantic salmon on inland waters, and fishing in scheduled waters by a method other than artificial fly.
