In provincial court today, William Conway pleaded guilty to five charges, including three in connection with the incident that killed Veronica Doyle Lewis on Oct. 24, 2013.

Conway, 51, pleaded guilty to criminal negligence by operating a vehicle that caused death, and three counts of breaching an undertaking, since the court had ordered that he abstain from alcohol, not drive and stay away from Lewis.

He has been in custody since his arrest. At around 1:20 a.m. that morning, the 57-year-old woman's body was found lying on the road on Firdale Drive, where it's believed the two had lived together.

Police said Conway was drunk when he got behind the wheel of his vehicle, hit the woman and took off.

Today Conway also pleaded guilty in connection with a separate incident on Feb. 15, 2013 in which he was charged with leaving the scene of an accident in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s.

A sentencing hearing for all matters is set for May 21.

Several members of Doyle Lewis’s family were in court today. Her daughters, Lee Doyle and Michelle Doyle, cried throughout proceedings.

Outside court, the women told reporters they want the maximum possible sentence for Conway and hope that the justice system doesn’t fail them.
