RNC provide update on number of people charged in recent HMP incidents

The RNC has provided an update today on the number of people charged in relation to an altercation at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary (HMP) on Forest Road in St. John’s Feb. 9.


On that day, at approximately 4:40 pm, RNC officers responded to the HMP to the report that an altercation had occurred between multiple individuals within the facility.

Individuals were transported to area hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators within the RNC Criminal Investigation Division have since charged nine individuals with various charges including assault causing bodily harm, RIOT, assault with a weapon, mischief and breaches of court orders.

The individuals were held to appear in provincial court.

In addition, eight individuals were arrested and charged with mischief in relation to an incident that occurred at the HMP on Feb. 20. Out of these eight, four were also included in the Feb. 9 incident.
