Joel Goodwin of Yarmouth, N.S., was fined $4,500 for misreporting fishing activity and exceeding the whelk pot limit during the 2013 whelk fishery off the south coast of Newfoundland, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) announced today.
Goodwin was convicted on March 19 in Grand Bank provincial court.
In addition to the fine, a vessel monitoring system (VMS) has to be installed on any vessel operated by Goodwin for one year with 15 minute interval reporting. The DFO standard reporting interval for VMS is hourly.
