Man allegedly assaults multiple officers after RNC gets tip on concealed weapon

A man accused of carrying a concealed weapon outside a club on George Street late Friday night allegedly had a violent encounter with police.

RNC news 4

Michael Stacey, 37, appeared in court with visible scrapes and scratches on his face Saturday morning, approximately 12 hours after he was arrested in downtown St. John’s.

Stacey — who has no fixed address according to court documents — was allegedly carrying a concealed hammer Friday on the popular street known for its many drinking establishments. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary received an anonymous tip that night about a man carrying a weapon.

According to the RNC’s overnight report, Stacey was allegedly causing a disturbance outside a club when police found him. Police allege the accused resisted arrest.

Stacey is charged with assaulting two police officers, resisting arrest, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a weapon for dangerous purposes, and uttering threats.

There was also a warrant issued late last month for Stacey’s arrest in connection to a theft incident at a Shoppers Drug Mart location in Mount Pearl. For that matter, Stacey and 36-year-old Amy Tucker are jointly charged with theft.

Lawyer Jeff Summers told Judge Pamela Goulding the Crown was opposed to Stacey’s release Saturday. Goulding agreed to have Stacey remanded in custody until Monday. He will return to court that day for a potential bail hearing.

This marks at least the third incident on George Street within the past month where a suspect has been accused of possessing a weapon for dangerous purposes. Two people were stabbed in separate incidents that occurred on consecutive weekends in late March and early April. Police arrested suspects in both of those cases.
