Dogs not allowed on city playgrounds, ballfields

Playgrounds and baseball fields in the City of St. John's are going to the dogs, says Coun. Danny Breen.

“I’ve had several complaints, a lot of them over the past couple of years,” Breen said at Monday’s meeting. “People are using the playgrounds and ballfields as dog parks. They take them off leash and let their dogs run and, of course, do their business in the area.”

Staff have had to remove a lot of dog feces from city parks, said Breen.

“It certainly is a health concern, especially with baseball season and other activities starting in the parks, children in particular falling on the ground,” he said, adding people are ignoring signs informing them playgrounds and ballfields are not dog parks. “We’ve locked the gates closed so they can’t get in, but they’re still being used. I’ve asked our animal control committee if we can have a designated officer in the animal-control area to pay a bit more attention to these parks, and just explain to people that there are serious issues involved with using them in this manner.”
