UPDATE: Youth expected to face more armed robbery charges

A young man, arrested in connection with a robbery in Mount Pearl Thursday night, is expected to have more charges laid against him for additional robberies that recently occurred in the Mount Pearl area.

The man's arrest by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary followed a report of an armed robbery around 11:30 p.m. Thursday night at a Needs Convenience store on Barbour Drive.

According to police, a male suspect had entered the store and demanded cash and cigarettes and left the area on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. There were no injuries sustained during the commission of the offence.

A 19-year-old male matching the suspect’s description was apprehended a short distance from the store. He was arrested and charged with robbery, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and disguise with intent. The accused was arrested without incident and appeared in provincial court this morning.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary had another busy night last night in the St. John’s-metro region. Officers responded to 220 calls in a 24-hour period on the Northeast Avalon.

Here's a summary of some of the more serious incidents:

Around 11:32 p.m., patrol officers and the K-9 Unit responded to an armed robbery in the Barbour Drive area of Mount Pearl.

A man, armed with a weapon, held up a convenience store and left with an undisclosed amount of money.

A 19-year-old was apprehended in the area a short time later and was taken into custody. The money and weapon were recovered. Criminal Investigation Division and Forensic Identification Services were called to assist and the matter is still under investigation.

Around 1:57 a.m. this morning, the RNC and firefighters with the St. John’s regional Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the area of Eastbourne Crescent in St. John’s. The fire caused moderate damage to the siding and rear patio of the home. There were no injuries and the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

A 14-year-old girl was arrested around 3:10 p.m. Thursday at a Mount Pearl school for possessing a prohibited weapon and carrying a concealed weapon. A knife and a set of brass knuckles were seized from the young girl by police.

She will appear in court at a later date. That investigation continues.

And, around 1:11 p.m. Thursday, a 40-year-old woman was arrested for assaulting a police officer on Water Street. The woman allegedly kicked the officer.There were no serious injuries in the incident.The woman was also charged with breach of a court order and was taken to court.
