The body of a 17-year-old youth was recovered Wednesday night in Barachois Pond on the province's west coast.
Bay St. George RCMP received a report around 7:26 p.m. Wednesday from a park warden at the Barachois Pond Provincial Park near Stephenville that the young male could not be located after having last been seen in the water about 25 feet from shore.
According to police, he had been fishing from shore when his line became hooked up on something in the water and he decided to swim out and try to free the line. After several minutes in the water, he began to exhibit signs of being in distress and efforts by others who were with him fishing were unsuccessful in getting aid to him.
RCMP members, provincial park wardens, the Barachois Ground Search and Rescue Team and members of the Marine Institute Safety and Emergency Rescue Training Centre searched the water in boats using underwater cameras and recovered his body around 10:57 p.m.
His name is not being released at this time and an autopsy is pending.
