The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Economic Crime Unit is issuing a public advisory regarding a scam where offenders are posing as representatives or affiliates of Microsoft.

RNC news 9

The caller advises them of a problem with their computer and offers to fix it through remote access once provided with a credit card number.

The RNC says when victims provide these offenders with remote access, they unknowingly give them access to everything on their computer. This can lead to identity theft, email takeovers and more.

The RNC Economic Crime Unit urges the general public to refrain from providing their personal information to unknown persons online or over the phone and to verify the authenticity of the person by requesting information and by then contacting the organization directly.

The RNC further advises not to provide your credit card number over the phone or allow anyone remote access to your computer.

The RNC is issuing a public advisory regarding a computer scam as though this is something new that just crossed their desk. This proplem has been ongoing for ages and people continue to report it but nothing has been done to stop it. There was a time when these scam artists would hang up when you mentioned you were going to report them to the police but now they will stay on the line and argue with you. It's OK for those of us who know the difference but I'm very concerned about those who are vulnerable like some of our seniors or those who are not very computer literate. With all due respect to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the RCMP I realize this is an international problem but more has to be done to bring these people to justice.

This scam has been going on for a long time they call me at least once a month sometimes more , I called the police , my phone provider , and all anyone can say is .. I'm sorry but there's nothing we can do about it" . So I have taken matters into my own hands .... when they call I make like I am completely stupid ( not a big leap ) and proceed to waste as much of their time as possible , then when I can tell they are starting to get frustrated I say that I have got it now and their window is open ( meanwhile I am usually watching TV or whatever , But no where near my computer and just saying whatever it takes to keep them on the phone) It's at this point they say " OK now what do you see ? " to which I reply "A Note" ... they say " what do you mean note ? " I then tell them it's a note from Bill Gates telling me to tell them to "Kiss Me Arse" They usually flip out at this point and I start laughing and hang up the phone. BTW my personal record is 45 minutes , lol.
