The province’s Finance minister says it’s a good thing that the Newfoundland and Labrador Nurses’ Union (NLNU) has ratified a collective agreement.

“I am very pleased to hear that the province’s nurses have ratified the collective agreement with a 97 per cent approval rate. This was a successful collective bargaining process, in which the negotiating teams co-operated to reach a good deal for these valued public employees,” Charlene Johnson said in a news release issued this afternoon.
The president of Treasury Board said the agreement shares the same framework as was reached with other public sector unions, including a five per cent salary increase over the term of the agreement.
In addition, all employees will receive a one-time pro-rated payment of $1,400.
Since 2013, the provincial government has also successfully negotiated collective agreements with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association, the Newfoundland Association of Public and Private Employees, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, and the Association of Allied Health Professionals.
In total, all collective agreements represent approximately 27,700 public employees.
The NLNU, which represents 5,700 registered nurses throughout the province ratified the provincial collective agreement Friday morning which was reached in May with 97 per cent in favour of the agreement.
“After a long negotiations process, we are pleased to have established a collective agreement that registered nurses support,” said NLNU president Debbie Forward.
“Our negotiations team worked hard to achieve the best agreement possible in a challenging negotiations climate. The result was an agreement that acknowledges the priorities of Registered Nurses and provides new supports in areas of RN education and leadership.”
The new collective agreement include a four-year collective agreement for the period of July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2016. Salary increases of two per cent effective July 1, 2014 and three per cent effective July 1, 2015.
This collective agreement will be in place until June 30, 2016.
