Preparation work has begun on the new, $31.9-million Wedgewood Park recreation centre.
Crews have begun clearing the ground for the centre, which will house a 25-metre lane pool, a leisure pool and waterslides, a 6,700-square foot gym, a daycare, a seniors’ area, a playground and other multi-use spaces. Construction is expected to take a little less than two years, St. John’s Coun. Danny Breen said Friday.
“This is the first purpose-built recreation centre in the history of the city that the city has built,” said Breen.
The current Wedgwood Park centre became part of St. John’s when the city and the town of Wedgewood Park were amalgamated in 1991. The centre will be kept open as long as possible during construction of the new centre, said Breen.
“The new building will be built kind of where the baseball field was, and the tennis courts,” he said.
“Our plan is to keep the old one open during construction, and we’re going to do that as long as possible. Certainly, we won’t compromise safety, but we’re hoping we can keep it open during construction, and once the other building is completed, we’ll take that one out of service, and that area becomes a parking lot at that point.”
The city plans to hold a sod-turning ceremony and barbecue June 20.
