Steve Kent has officially made the race for leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador a three-person battle.

Steve Kent will announce Thursday he is running for the PC leadership.

Speaking to supporters and media at Hotel Mount Pearl Thursday evening, Kent started his speech by talking about the birth of his third child just a couple days ago, and how he's been thinking about the future.

"I will make the tough decisions," said the MHA for Mount Pearl North. "I will guide us through whatever waters we may encounter."

Kent joins Topsail MHA Paul Davis and former St. John's East MHA John Ottenheimer in the race to permanently replace Kathy Dunderdale as both party leader and the premier. She retired from politics in January. Tom Marshall has served as the interim premier ever since.

This is the second PC leadership race this year. Corner Brook businessman Frank Coleman was scheduled to takeover the leadersip this weekend. However, Coleman announced early last month he was dropping out of politics due to a family matter.

Municipal Affairs Minister Steve Kent will make it official this evening, announcing that he's running to be Premier and leader of the PC Party.

Kent is holding a campaign launch and pig roast at the Hotel Mount Pearl, with his announcement timed to be taken live by the 6pm CBC and NTV supper news broadcasts. Health Minister Paul Davis held a similar event Wednesday evening, announcing he is also running for the leadership. Former cabinet minister John Ottenheimer announced several weeks ago that he's in the race too.

The deadline for entering the leadership race is Monday. Tories will gather at a convention in September to pick the new leader.
