Clarenville fisherman Gary John Smith was fined $1,500 after being convicted on charges recently for leaving gillnets in the water too long and failing to release an incidental catch of snow crab.

He was convicted on June 13.

Smith was charged with two counts of leaving gillnets in the water for more than 48 consecutive hours — a violation of his licence condition.

He was fined $750 on each count.

The snow crab he had taken (73 pounds of sections and legs) was forfeited to the Crown.
