Ontario man rescued on Labrador river

A 61-year-old from Ontario was rescued from the shoreline of the Notakwanon River in Labrador on Saturday after getting in trouble while canoeing on the river on Friday.


The RCMP in Natuashish received a call for assistance from the man who had planned to canoe the river which is approximately 110 km north west of Natuashish.  

The lone male had been dropped off July 16 at the with his canoe and gear and got into trouble a short time later when his canoe got lodged between rocks in the fast moving current.

The man was not able to retrieve his canoe but did manage to save his supplies.

Fire and Emergency Services NL was contacted and a helicopter rescue was carried out on Saturday.

The Happy Valley/Goose Bay Ground Search and Rescue Team assisted with the rescue and after repelling from the helicopter, managed to bring the man to safety without injury.
