Second extensive search effort in less than a week

The RCMP detachment in Rocky Harbour is empty as of shortly after 4:30 p.m., with police officers tied up in searches for two men from the area — one missing and presumed dead, the other now officially declared missing.

The latter and latest case is a resident of the town of Cow Head and was first reported missing on Tuesday at about 10:50 p.m. His name is not being released by police.

“(He) was on the wharf at Cow Head with a group of other people. (He) left the area on an ATV and has not been accounted for since that time,” reads a statement issued by the police at about 4:30 p.m. today.

“(He) is believed to have gone into the water near the wharf,” it notes.

“The involved ATV has been recovered by police.”

The Canadian Coast Guard, Parks Canada staff, federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Bonne Bay Ground Search and Rescue team are helping in the ongoing search.

Parks Canada closed Shallow Bay Beach in Gros Morne National Park on Wednesday to allow personnel involved in that search to access the area. In a news release, it said the beach will remain closed until further notice.

Meanwhile, a second man — 47-year-old Albert Brake of Trout River — was last seen on Sunday, July 20, going into the water at the beach in Trout River.

A search was launched, involving the same groups and volunteers from the community, lasting through to this morning.

“This matter is now considered to be a recovery mission. He was not located,” the RCMP has stated.

The RCMP’s provincial dive team will be combing the waters over the next few days, according to police.
