Power was lost in an area of St. John's east during a heavy rainfall and some thunder, but the company says the weather wasn't to blame.

The utility says insulators on the wires near a substarion in St. John’s east end are believed to have been intentionally damaged. The company is still investigating the extent of the damages.

The area affected included Carrick Drive, Newfoundland Drive, Highland Drive and King William Estates.

Most of the affected customers had power restored by about 10 a.m., while restoration took a while longer for a handful of other customers, according to a Newfoundland Power spokeswoman.

The company is currently not reporting any power outages on its website

Newfoundland Power has asked the message be conveyed that any and all vandalism is a safety risk, to both Newfoundland Power employees and the public, including those committing the crimes.
